HORNETS CLUTCH SHOOTING AND DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR SPARTANS

Dover, DE ? The Delaware State Hornets clutch shooting and defensive effort was too much for the Norfolk State Spartans as they cruised to a 69-54 win.  It was their third straight win improving to 6-9 and 3-0 in the MEAC, while the Spartans took their first loss in the conference falling to 3-1 and 6-9 overall.  The loss also snapped a four game win streak for the Spartans.

Holding a six point lead (16-10) with 10:10 left in the first half, the Hornets closed out the half outscoring the Spartans 23-9 and took a 20 point lead 39-19 into the locker room.  The Hornets closed out the first half shooting 55.2% (16-29) from the floor and defensively held the Spartans to 36.4% (8-22).  DSU also forced the Spartans into 10 first half turnovers.

In the second half, the Hornets kept up the intensity on defense and continued their hot shooting as freshman guard Trevor Welcher played a major part in keeping the Spartans at bay scoring five of his eight second half points in the last five minutes of the game.

Senior forward Roy Bright led all scorers with 20 points and he also led the Hornets on the boards with six rebounds.  Also in double digits was junior guard Donald Johnson who finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
