Orangeburg, SC ? Senior forward and Pre-Season MEAC Player of the Year, Roy Bright led all scorers with 20 points as the Delaware State Hornets improved to 2-0 in the MEAC with a 64-57 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs. The win also snapped a five game Hornet losing streak, while the Bulldogs dropped to 4-11 and 0-1 in the MEAC.
Defensively the Hornets held the Bulldogs to 29.2% shooting in the first half and took a 25-23 lead into the locker room. The Hornets also forced the Bulldogs into nine first half turnovers.
In the second half the nip and tuck battle took a change after the Bulldogs took their last lead 47-46 with 4:44 left, when the Hornets went on a 10-4 run to take a nine point lead (60-51) with 30 seconds left in the game.
The Hornets forced the Bulldogs into 17 turnovers, but the Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 38-28.
Also in double figures for the Hornets was freshman point guard Trevor Welcher who finished with 15 points. Bright also led the Hornets with five rebounds.
The Bulldogs finished with two in double figures led by Jason Johnson who had a double-double 17 points and 15 rebounds. Jason Flagler added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
The Hornets will return to action on Monday when they travel to Winston Salem State for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
