Sherri Pla

Sherri Pla — Head Women’s Golf Coach
Sherri Pla brings a championship pedigree, professional playing experience, and approximately 15 years of coaching and player-development expertise to Delaware State University.
A native of Riviera Beach, Florida, Pla was a standout basketball player at Florida Atlantic University, where she scored more than 1,000 career points and became the program’s all-time leader in assists and steals. A versatile NCAA Division I athlete, Pla also competed in softball, golf, and cross-country during her collegiate career.
Her athletic career ultimately extended into two professional sports. Pla played professional softball with the Durham Dragons of the Women’s Professional Softball League (WPSL) before later pursuing professional golf and earning status on the LPGA Symmetra Tour. She also competed in the World Long Drive Championships.
Pla’s accomplishments as an athlete and golf professional have earned her induction into two Halls of Fame:
  • Florida Atlantic University Athletics Hall of Fame
  • African American Golfers Hall of Fame
After spending eight years as a teacher and coach, Pla pursued her passion for golf and became a PGA Class A Professional. Her experience as a multi-sport collegiate athlete, two-sport professional athlete, educator, and PGA Professional has provided the foundation for a coaching career centered on developing the complete student-athlete.
Pla began her collegiate golf coaching career at Alabama State University, where she helped the program capture a SWAC Team Championship in her first season and coached an Individual SWAC Champion in her second season.
Her extensive player-development résumé includes leading a 17U team to the 2024 PGA Jr. League National Championship, winning three PGA Jr. League Regional Championships, coaching four teams to the Florida High School State Golf Championships, and capturing four consecutive South Florida PGA Team Golf Championships.
Pla has also received numerous honors for her contributions to the game, including the South Florida PGA Professional Development Award, South Florida PGA Player Development Award, South Florida PGA Youth Golf Development Award, and recognition as a U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Coach.
Now leading the Delaware State Women’s Golf program, Pla is focused on building a championship culture through recruiting, elite player development, academic achievement, leadership, accountability, and competitive excellence while preparing student-athletes for success on the golf course, in the classroom, and beyond Delaware State.
