Named Delaware State University Director of Athletics at Delaware State University on July 23, 2018, Scott Gines spent his first 12 months focused on the department’s people. Within this timeframe, Dr. Gines hired nine new DSU head coaches, developed a department salary plan, term employment agreements for all head coaches, completed a six-year multi-million dollar and gender equity scholarship plan, orchestrated a three-year strategic plan, and launched a scheduling philosophy featuring regional Division I competitions and enhance home schedules.Â

Gines’ 37-year higher education career spans a range of institutions and leadership positions. From 2000-2009 Gines served as the director of athletics at three universities, elevating revenues, launching capital improvements, community engagement initiatives, and captured 11 conference and three regional championships, received 17 post-season bids, highlighted by three Elite Eight, two Final Four and a national championship game appearance.Â

From July 2009 through December 2012, Dr. Gines served as vice president for institutional advancement at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, overseeing the departments of athletics, career services, alumni, development, marketing and communications, and he became the vice president for intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation in January 2013.Â

From 2013-2018, Javelina Athletics posted its most successful six-year period of department-wide competitive success, totaling 28 NCAA post-season appearances, eight national top 10 finishes, four Lone Star Conference Championships, one National Runner-up, two team National Champions, a College World Series appearance, a Live United Bowl victory, and 25 NCAA Division II individual National Champions. In addition, Javelina Athletics advanced to the semi-finals of the Division II Award of Excellence on three occasions, more than doubled the annual number of degree recipients, and finished in the top 91 of the NCAA Division II Learfield Cup standings for a record six consecutive years.

During his Texas A&M University-Kingsville tenure, Dr. Gines developed a comprehensive gender equity plan, launched women’s golf, tennis, and beach volleyball, and nearly doubled women’s student-athlete participation. In addition, he established $12 million in new athletics and recreation facility construction and upgrades and increased scholarship budgets by nearly $1 million. Through a series of initiatives, Gines increased annual operational revenues by over $3.6 million, Javelina football repeatedly finished in the National top 10 in average per game attendance, the department set national benchmarks for Division II community engagement, and TAMUK Athletics won the bid to host the 2019 and 2020 NCAA II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.Â

Dr. Gines began his college athletics career in 1983 as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Virginia, and in 1987 he became one of the nation’s youngest Division I head coaches. In 2000 Gines concluded a 17-year Division I coaching career with 31 professional baseball selections, four Major Leaguers, nine Academic All-American awards, and he departed from Radford University and the Virginia Military Institute as their all-time wins leader at that time. On ten occasions Gines’ former players and assistant coaches led or currently lead NCAA Division I baseball programs as head coaches.

Recognized for his work in strategic and financial planning, Gines served on the NAIA’s Council of Athletic Administrators; the NCAA II Northeast Regional Advisory Committee (Football); the NCAA II South Central Regional Advisory Committee (Baseball); the NCAA II/D2ADA Women and Minorities Mentorship Program; the NCAA Research Committee; the NCAA Innovations Grant External Review Committee; and he chaired the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Expansion Committee and led the Lone Star Conference Strategic Plan Development Team (2016-2021). An experienced speaker, Dr. Gines is a past-presenter at the NAIA, NCAA, and NACDA national conventions.

A 1983 distinguished graduate and military scholar of the Virginia Military Institute, Gines holds a M.Ed. in sport psychology from the University of Virginia and an Ed.D. in Leadership from the University of St. Thomas (MN). He is a fellow of the Higher Education Management Institute (Vanderbilt University), a graduate of the Sport Management Institute Executive Program (Universities of Michigan and Texas), and a graduate of the Transformational Leadership Program at the Universities of Adelaide and Texas. A former faculty member at Dakota Wesleyan and Fairmont State Universities, Gines’ publications include submissions in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, The Coaching Clinic, A.B.C.A Quarterly Digest and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

Dr. Gines is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (1996), the Manchester Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals, and the Empire Who’s Who. A 1984 Outstanding Young Men of America recipient and 1984 U.S. Olympic Tryout participant, Gines received the 1989 Big South Baseball Coach of the Year award, served on the Coastal Bend (TX) Fellowship of Christian Athletes Board of Directors, and he is the past-President of Kingsville Rotary (2013-14), and a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Gines is married to the former Ginger Holley, a Davidson College and Dakota Wesleyan University alumna and registered nurse. They have two grown children, son, Patrick, daughter, Kelly, daughter-in-law, Lauren, and granddaughters, Piper, Eloise, Hazel and Lucy.Â
