DOVER, Del. — Delaware State University Athletics officially introduced women's flag football as the department's newest varsity sport during a press conference on Monday, September 28, marking a historic milestone for the Hornets and expanding competitive opportunities for women at the university.
As one of the nation's fastest-growing emerging sports, women's flag football represents an exciting addition to Delaware State's athletic offerings. The launch of the program reflects the university's continued commitment to innovation, student-athlete development, and expanding opportunities for women in collegiate athletics.
Delaware State University President Dr. Tony Allen, Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Tucker, and inaugural head coach Wesley Davis delivered remarks during the announcement, highlighting the significance of the program and its potential impact on future generations of student-athletes.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Delaware State University and the future of women's flag football," said Davis. "We are looking forward to building a program that can serve as a blueprint for women's flag football at HBCUs and beyond. As we enter our inaugural season, we recognize the responsibility we have to establish a strong foundation and help shape the future of this sport."
Alongside the announcement of Davis as the program's first head coach, Delaware State also introduced members of his inaugural coaching staff. Everett Myles Christmas will serve as offensive coordinator, while Julian Dixon joins the staff as offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. Together, the staff will help establish the program's culture, develop student-athletes, and prepare the Hornets for their first season of competition.
As head coach, Davis will oversee all aspects of the program's development, including recruiting, roster construction, player development, and preparation for the inaugural season. The program will focus on building a competitive team while emphasizing leadership, academic achievement, teamwork, and personal growth.
The addition of women's flag football further strengthens Delaware State's commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for student-athletes while contributing to the continued growth of the sport across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
With the foundation now in place, the Hornets are preparing to begin a new chapter in Delaware State Athletics. The program's launch signals not only the beginning of a new team, but also an opportunity to help shape the future of women's flag football at the collegiate level.
Additional information regarding the team's competition schedule, roster, and conference affiliation will be announced as it becomes available.
The foundation is set. The future is bright. And the Hornets are just getting started.
