Dover, Del. (Mar. 25, 2023) --- The Delaware State softball team scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to highlight its 4-2 victory over South Carolina State in game 2 of a MEAC doubleheader today. The Bulldogs won the opener 4-2.
Game two was scoreless for the first five innings. Delaware State finally broke though in the top of the sixth.
Emma Crowe doubled to lead off the inning, and Joie Raybourn followed with a single to give the Hornets runners at third and first. The next batter,
Britney Phally, also singled to score Crowe and pinch runner
Kayla Lester to give Delaware State a 2-0 lead. After South Carolina State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Hornets' lead in half, Crowe drove in a run on a SC State error and Juliana Cerron scored the second run of the inning on another Bulldog error to put the Hornets ahead 4-1.
Mayanah McIntosh pitched a complete game to earn the win for Delaware State, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out five.
In the opener, Delaware State scored first with a run in the top of the first inning, but did not tally another run until the seventh. Â Phally singled to lead off the game for the Hornets. She stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the game's first run on a ground out by Uxua Lopez.
The Delaware State lead held up until SC State scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to open up a 4-1 lead. The Hornets plated an unearned run in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.
Sydney Hoffman was the losing pitcher in the opener for Delaware State.
The Hornets and Bulldogs will close out the series with a single game on Sunday. Â Â
