Dover, Del. (Feb. 17, 2023) --- The Delaware State softball team fell to 2-2 this season after losses to Bowling Green and Central Michigan on day one of the T-Mobile Tournament at the University of Florida today. The Hornets lost to Bowling Green 11-1 in the opener, and suffered a 13-3 defeat at the hands of Central Michigan in their second game of the day. Each game was called after Delaware State batted in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Bowling Green started quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second to open up a 9-0 lead. The Hornets scored their lone run in the top of the third inning.
Julianna Cerron led off the inning with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Destiny Beckham and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
In addition to the sacrifice bunt, Beckham had two singles in two official at bats, and stole a base.
In the Central Michigan contest, the Chippewas scored four in the top of the first inning on a grand slam by Kelsey Alexander, who drove in five runs in the contest.
The Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the first when
Britney Phally doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a single by Beckham and scored on the back end of a double steal with Beckham.
Delaware State trailed 13-1 in the bottom of the fifth when
Uxua Modrego Lopez doubled in a run and
Chandler Martin followed with a RBI single to close out the scoring.
Phally and Modrego Lopez had two hits each, while Beckham was one-for-three for the Hornets in the second game. Beckham has six hits in eight at bats for a .750 average, while Modrego Lopez is batting .625 ( 5 for 8) with two homers and three RBI in Delaware State's four games this season. Â
The Hornets will take on Central Michigan again on Saturday (6:00 pm) and close out the tournament against host Florida on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
