UNBEATEN HORNETS STORM BACK TO DEFEAT HOYAS

Dover, Del. (Sep. 3, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team dropped its first two sets of the season before clawing back to defeat Georgetown 3-2 in the Red Flash Invitational at St. Francis University today. The win gives the Hornets a 4-0 start for the first time in team history.
Georgetown won the first set 25-19, and opened up a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 victory in set two. The Hornets stayed alive in the match by winning the third set 25-21 and pulled even with a 25-18 victory in set four.
Delaware State completed the comeback with a 15-11 win in the deciding fifth set.
The Hornets trailed 6-4 in the fifth set before running off the next four points to open up an 8-6 lead.
DSU capped off a 3-0 run with a service ace to open up a 14-11 lead and clinched the win on a kill by Ariana Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, the MEAC leader in hitting percentage entering the match, recorded eight kills on 14 attacks for a .500 pct. in the contest.
Valerio Otero had a team-high 16 kills, while Alondra Maldonado added 12 and Mayah Ngundam 10 to lead the Hornets.
DSU's Sydney Lewis had a match-high seven blocks and Ngundam collected five.
Delaware State's Kristi Gomez and Otero tied for match-high honors with 22 digs each.
Facing elimination in the third set, the Hornets trailed 10-6 after a kill by the Hoyas.
The Hornets scored seven of the next nine points and opened up a 13-12 lead on an ace by Jasmal Cruz.
Delaware State had a .455 attack percentage in the third set.
The Hornets will look to stay unbeaten with matches against host St. Francis and St. Peter's on Saturday. Delaware State defeated St. Peter's 3-0 in the DSU Invitational last weekend.
