Dover, Del. (Apr. 24, 2021) --- Delaware State collected 13 hits, its second-highest total of the season, and
Maikyla Nelson tossed a complete game to highlight a 9-3 victory over Norfolk State in the second game of a doubleheader today.
The Spartans won Saturday's first game 7-2 and took three of the four contests in the weekend series.
In the second game today, designated player
Jaelyn Baker was three-for-four with a run batted in, while
Hannah Crumblish and
Alaena Selden drove in two runs each.
The Hornets trailed 2-0 before coming to bat in the bottom of the first inning. DSU tied the game at 2-2 when Seldon singled in
Jasmine Melgoza and
Jonah Cunnigan in the first.
Baker followed with a run-scoring single to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Crumblish also singled in a first inning run to stretch the lead to 4-2.
Delaware State added three runs in the third to open up a 7-2 advantage. Crumblish and
Nicolette Barranger drove in third inning runs, while the Hornets also scored on a Norfolk State error in the inning.
The Hornets added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, including one on a single by third baseman
Jade King.
Nelson allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out two without a walk to improve to 4-4 on the season.
In today's opener, Norfolk State's Gabby Vaughn was two for four with a home run and three RBI to lead the Spartans.
The Spartans led 5-0 after two innings. Delaware State trailed 7-0 before scoring its two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Â
