PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --- The No. 14 Delaware State University bowling team competed over the weekend in the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic hosted by University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The Hornets were led by the top-five finish of sophomore Saralyne Nassberg who finished fourth overall in a field of 95 bowlers. Nassberg rolled an average of 219.20 over the course of five games with her highest of the weekend being game three where she bowled a 241. She recorded the highest finish of all competitors who represented the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) this weekend.

Stefanny Toala brought home a top-25 finish for Delaware State, finishing 25th overall where she bowled three 200+ games (200, 207 and 201) out of her five games for an average of 195.40 on the weekend.

Emily Breidegam made her presence known as her 28th overall finish was the highest by a MEAC freshman in the tournament. Breidegam recorded a 973 total (194.60 average) and rolled a team single-game high 268 in game two.

This weekend's tournament featured a 15-team bracket of 13 nationally ranked teams with the other two receiving votes. Delaware State finished fifth overall behind No. 3 Vanderbilt who took fourth place this past weekend. Sixth-ranked Sam Houston State were crowned tournament champions while eighth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson claimed the runner-up spot and fellow MEAC foe, fifth-ranked North Carolina A&T took third.

The Hornets finished ahead of four teams who were ranked higher coming into this tournament including seventh-ranked Youngstown State.

"Going into every weekend tournament we go over team and individual goals and from the get-go it was always a top-five finish this weekend. This team is exciting because at any point, we had four freshmen in with a sophomore returner and for as young as they are (aside from having a junior and a senior), they were holding their own against higher ranked opponents. It was special to see this team communicate, work together and be in the moment together. It was also really important to see them having fun, bowling together. It was exciting to end this semester's tournaments on a high note and we'll be ready to pick back up where we left off so we can give Stef (Stefanny Toala) the sendoff she deserves in the back-half of the season" stated head coach Elysia Current on the Hornets' performance at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic.

Delaware State returns to action January 21, 2022 to compete in the Northeast Classic.
