Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2020) --- The Delaware State softball team ended a two-game scoreless streak and senior
Jasmine Melgoza had four hits in five at bats, but the early season frustrations continued on Saturday. The Hornets fell to Winthrop 7-1 and Campbell 9-1 in day two of Charlotte's Green & White Classic.
In the Winthrop contest, the game was tied at 1-1 before the Eagles scored three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take control.
Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Jaelyn Gorham drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by
Jade King. There were two outs when Melgoza singled up the middle to score Gorham with the game's first run.
The run snapped a two-game, 12-inning scoreless streak for the Hornets.
Winthrop answered with a run in the bottom of the second to even the score.

Tiffany Diao (0-3) allowed three runs in the fourth and reliever
Brianna Baker surrendered the Eagles' three insurance runs in the sixth.
Melgoza had three of DSU's six hits, including a double.
Alaena Seldon, Hannah Crumblish and
Jade King recorded the other Delaware State hits.
Campbell scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back to keep the Hornets winless this season (0-9).
The big blow in the inning was a three-run double by Noemi Cortez to give the Camels a 5-0 lead. Cortez also had a two-run homer in the fifth to close out the Campbell scoring.
Melgoza and
Jaelyn Baker had the lone hits in the game for Delaware State. Melgoza has a hit in each of the last six games to riae her average to .429 this season (9-for-21).
The Hornets will close out the tournament with contests against Campbell (9:00 am) and host Charlotte (11:30 am) on Sunday.
