Conway, S.C. (Feb. 16, 2020) --- The Delaware State softball team wrapped up its season opening weekend with losses to Northern Illinois and host Coastal Carolina in the Bash at the Beach Tournament.
The Hornets fell to NIU 10-2 before suffering a 13-0 loss to Coastal to go winless in six tournament contests this weekend.
In the Northern Illinois game, Katie Keller was four-for-four with a run batted in, while Megan Guericke and Amber Bumbalough drove in two runs each to lead the Huskies' 13-hit attack.
Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning.
Jasmine Melgoza and
Jordan Casey singled to lead off the inning. DSU had runners at third and second with two outs when Alaena Seldon reached on a NIU error, scoring Casey with the game's first run.
Northern Illinois answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off DSU starter
Andrea Johnson to take the lead for good.
The Huskies added a run in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Delaware State pulled a run closer in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Jaelyn Bajer and Seldon to cut the NIU lead to 4-2.
The Huskies added a run in the bottom of the fourth and added three in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. The game was called after NIU scored two runs in the sixth due to the eight run rule.
DSU had seven hits in the contest, including two each for Melgoza and Seldon.
In the Hornets' tournament finale, Coastal Carolina scored 11 runs in the second inning and never looked back. The Chanticleers sent 14 batters to the plate, collecting six hits and aided by two Delaware State errors in the inning. The big blows in the inning were three-run homers by Sydney Guess and Abbey Montoya.
Delaware State had four hits in the game, including a single by Seldon for her third hit of the day. Jonah Gorham had her first double of the season, while
Taylor Leydig and Hannah Crumblish also singled for the Hornets.
DSU returns to action at the three-day UNC-Charlotte Tournament next weekend (Feb. 21-23).
The Hornets will play their first home games on Mar. 17 against Stony Brook. Â
