Norfolk, Va. (May 14, 2014) --- Delaware State University seniors Aarron Nardone and Mike Alexander ?were selected to the All-MEAC Baseball First Team for the second time in their careers, while DJ Miller (sr. ) and?Matt McClain (sr.)?were also named to the first team in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.
DSU's Cameron Cecil was selected to the 2014 All-MEAC Second Team.
Delaware State's four?All-MEAC First Team members and five?total selections were tops among all league teams.
Nardone, selected as an All-MEAC outfielder, is the conference leader with a .621 slugging percentage; and is second in the league in home runs (8) and runs batted in (43); and is third in hitting (.366). In addition, he's leads all NCAA Division I players in walks (43) and walks per game (1.02); and is second in the nation with a .524 on-base percentage. The Chesapeake, Va., native was also named to the 2013 All-MEAC First Team and was a second team selection in 2012.
The 2014 All-MEAC First Team catcher, Alexander is second in the conference and 14th in the nation with a .396 average. He's also second in the MEAC in on-base percentage (.503), third in slugging percentage (.597) and fourth in home runs (7).
Alexander (New Castle, Del.) was also a 2013 All-MEAC First Team selection.
Miller, the All-MEAC shortstop, is tops in the league and sixth in the nation with a .417 average. He's also the conference leader in doubles per game (0.34), third in slugging percentage (.597) and seventh on on-base percentage. Miller (Wilmington, Del.) is also a candidate for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the country. ??
McClain, one of two All-MEAC First Team starting pitchers is 7-0 with a 2.43 ERA this season. He is tops in the league and sixth in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.71); and leads the conference (seventh in NCAA) in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (0.77). He has 54 strikeouts and seven walks in 81.1 innings this season. The Dover, Del., native was an All-MEAC Second Team pick in 2012.??
Cecil, a third baseman, is the lone Hornet on the All-MEAC Second Team. He's batting .351 and is tied for the team lead in hits (60) and doubles (14). The Gloucester, Va., native was an All-MEAC First Team selection in 2012 and 2013.?
Florida A&M first baseman Bennie Robinson was selected as the 2014 MEAC Player-of-the-Year, while Bethune-Cookman's Montana Durapau was named the league's top pitcher.
North Carolina Central outfielder Carlos Ortiz is the MEAC's top rookie. The Coach-of-the-Year was awarded Florida A&M's Jamey Shouppe.
Delaware State begins 2014 MEAC Tournament play against Savannah State today at 4 p.m. at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
