Dover, Del. (May 3, 2013) --- The Delaware State University baseball team will close out its MEAC regular season schedule with a three-game series against UMES this weekend. The Hornets and Hawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.; and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Last week, Delaware State clinched its second straight MEAC Northern Division title and a number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Hornets are 29-13 overall and 18-3 in the division. DSU has swept six games from UMES this season, outscoring the Hawks 63-16.
The Hornets are leading the MEAC with a .318 team batting average. DSU has five of the top seven hitters in the league.
Mike Alexander (Jr.) is second in the MEAC with a .373 average. Alexander is tops in the MEAC and sixth among all NCAA Division I players in stolen bases (32) and steals per game (.76 pg) this season.
DSU's J.P. Frey is third in the MEAC in hitting (.369) and tops in hits with 65. Hassan Evans has climbed to fourth in the league in hitting (.361), while Cameron Cecil is fifth (.359) and Aaron Nardone seventh (.354). Nardone is also tied for fourth in the nation in triples (6) and ninth in triples per game (.14).
DSU is 125-for-144 on stolen base attempts to rank second in Division I in steals and thefts per-game (3.0) this season.
Delaware State is also No. 1 in the nation in hit batsmen. The Hornets have been plunked 104 times this season to also lead the country in HBPs per game (2.5). DSU set a NCAA Division I record with 152 hit by pitches in 2012.
Ryan Haas is third in the NCAA in hit-by-pitches (22) and hit-by-pitches per games (.54).
Delaware State's pitching staff has a combined earned run average of 4.03. The Hornets' top three starters are a combined 18-4 this season.
Hornet senior Jordan Elliott is tied for second in the MEAC in wins (7) and third in strikeouts (53).
