Dover, Del. (May 14, 2013) --- The Delaware State University baseball team will face North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday (May 15) at 4:00 p.m. at Marty Miller Field on the campus of Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va.
The MEAC North Champion Hornets are one of two No. 1 tournament seeds. DSU was 33-13 overall and 21-3 in the MEAC North during the 2013 regular season. North Carolina A&T (15-35 overall) is a No. 4 seed after finishing fourth in the MEAC South (8-16) during the regular season.
The Hornets and Aggies did not meet during the 2013 regular season. The teams last met during the 2012 MEAC Tournament. Delaware State won the 2012 tournament contest 4-2. Starting pitcher Ryan Haas and reliever Derek Marshallsea combined on a six-hitter, while Scott Davis and Tony Gatto drove in two runs each to lead DSU to the victory.
Delaware State holds a 13-10 edge over North Carolina A&T in MEAC Tournament meetings.
The winner of the Delaware State/North Carolina A&T contest will face the winner of the (#2 South) Bethune-Cookman vs. (#3 North) Coppin State opening round game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
The loser of the DSU/NCA&T first round contest will play an elimination game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
MEAC South Champion Savannah State (29-22; 17-7) is the other No. 1 tournament seed. The Tigers are in their second year in the conference.
Bethune-Cookman is seeking its eighth straight MEAC Tournament title and 15th overall. The Wildcats defeated Delaware State to win the 2012 championship.
The Hornets won their only MEAC Tournament title in 1989. DSU is looking to reach the championship game in back-to-back years for the first time since 1988-89.
The 2013 MEAC championship round is set to begin on Sunday (May 19) at 1:00 p.m. A second game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., if necessary.
