WACO, Texas - Senior Alyssa Berfield (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored a meet-high 90 with MVP honors Saturday and the Delaware State University equestrian team won, 1181-1120, in overall points, but Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State snuck by the Hornets and won the overall event, 9-7, at the Baylor Willis Invitational.
The two teams tied in three of the four events, with Miami/Ohio State pulling ahead in Horsemanship, 3-1. Senior Breann Huyett (Narvon, Pa.) recorded the lone point for Delaware State in the event, with her MVP ride of 73 on Copper.
Berfield tallied her season-high score of 90 in the Equitation event against Kitty Sarosy's 85 on Tyler.
Freshman Tiffany Lee (Flowermound, Texas) also earned MVP honors for the first time in her career with a career-high mark of 86 in Equitation over Fences.
Austin Griffith collected Miami/Ohio State's lone MVP award in the meet with her ride of 73 in the Reining event.
Also on Saturday, the Hornets fell, 2-13, to host and No. 6 Baylor. Freshman Lindsey Blum (Henderson, Md.) earned DSU's only MVP honors with her 73 point ride on Polly in the Reining event. Blum, however, did not earn her point as she tied Baylor's Claire Edwards.
Berfield also won her point for Del State with a 79 over Catherine Duhring's 78 on Pablo. Another freshman came through in the clutch in Brooke Moore (Dover, Del.) as she won her point with a 73.5 in Horsemanship.
The Hornets do not compete for another month as they host South Dakota State and Tennessee-Martin at Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center Nov. 3.
