WACO, Texas - Despite winning in overall points, 1131-1125, the Delaware State University equestrian team was unable to win in head-to-head matchups as New Mexico State University defeated the Hornets, 10-6, on the first day of the Baylor Willis Invitational.
DSU was victorious over the Aggies in the Western events, 5-3 (559-492).
Seniors Breann Huyett (Narvon, Pa.) and McKenzie Trueba (Williams, Ariz.) earned MVP honors in Reining and Horsemanship, respectively. Huyett scored a 72 to defeat Stefanie Story's 71 on Twisted in the Reining event. Trueba posted a 73 in Horsemanship, besting Megan Gould's 68.5 on Copper.
Huyett also won her point in the Horsemanship event, with a score of 69 while sophomore Tayler Scuse (Smyrna, Del.) defeated Lauren DeVoe, 70-67, on Trip.
Sophomore Kali Voshell (Felton, Del.) narrowly won her Reining point with a score of 71 to Tara Wilson's 70.5.
Freshman Carlin Savage (Salisbury, Md.) earned the Hornets' lone point in the Hunterseat events with her 71-point win on Lincoln in Equitation over Fences.
The Hornets continue the Baylor Willis Invitational Saturday as they take on host Baylor and Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State.
