WILMER, Texas - In her first collegiate event, Jordan Odle (Camarillo, Calif.) recorded a score of 75 to earn MVP honors in the Equitation on the Flats as the Delaware State University equestrian team opened the 2012-13 season with a 8-4 Hunterseat loss to SMU at Buckbranch Farm Thursday evening.
Odle defeated Maddy Stover, 75-64, on Slate to lead the Hornets to a 3-3 tie on the Flats. The freshman also competed in Equitation over Fences and scored a 68 to Julie Fischer's 82 on Landy.
Also earning points for Del State in Equitation were seniors Alyssa Berfield (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Shelby Bonneville (New Windsor, Md.). Berfield outscored Taylor McClung, 61-59 on Dinero while Bonneville scored a 62 to Courtney Line's 0 on Conde.
While the event ended in a tie, the Hornets defeated the Mustangs, 317-308, in overall Equitation points.
In the Equitation over Fences, freshman Taylor Duke (Clayton, Del.) earned her first collegiate victory with a score of 73. She defeated Greer Hindle's score of 69 on Spencer.
Fellow freshman Tiffany Lee (Flowermound, Texas) recorded an outstanding score of 80, but was edged out by Alex Butterworth's 81 on Olivia.
While SMU won the meet, 8-4, the margin of points was slim at 785-768.
The Hornets continue their season-opening weekend with the Baylor Willis Invitational Friday and Saturday. Delaware State will take on host Baylor, New Mexico State and Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State in the two-day event.
