Dover, Del. (May 14, 2012) --- The Delaware State University baseball team will face Savannah State in the opening round of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday (May 16) at 4:00 p.m. at Marty Miller Field on the campus of Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va.
The MEAC North Champion Hornets are one of two No. 1 tournament seeds. DSU was 35-15-1 overall and 22-2 in the MEAC North during the 2012 regular season. Savannah State (20-30 overall) is a No. 4 seed after finishing fourth in the MEAC South (11-13) during the regular season.
The Hornets won three of four games against the Tigers this season. The teams met Feb. 24-26 in Savannah, Ga. Delaware State won the first game of the series 4-2. The teams split a doubleheader the following day. DSU won the opener 11-5. Savannah State took the nightcap 3-0. Delaware State won the series finale 6-2.
Since J.P. Blandin became Delaware State's head coach in 2001, the Hornets hold an 11-7 lead in the all-time series with the Tigers.
The winner of the Delaware State/Savannah State contest will face the winner of the (#2 South) North Carolina Central vs. (#3 North) UMES opening round game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
MEAC South Champion Bethune-Cookman (30-24; 18-5) is the other No. 1 tournament seed. The Wildcats are seeking their seventh straight MEAC Tournament title and 14th overall.
Delaware State is seeking its first MEAC championship since 1989. The Hornets last appeared in the tournament finals in 2004.
The 2012 MEAC championship round is set to begin on Sunday (May 20) at 1:00 p.m. A second game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., if necessary.
