DOVER, Del. - Seniors Alyssa Berfield (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Breann Huyett (Narvon, Pa.) each collected MVP honors Saturday morning at Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center, but the Delaware State University equestrian team couldn't pull out a victory as they fell, 6-10, to South Dakota State University.
Berfield won her MVP award with a season-high 80-point ride to earn her team point on Raven in Equitation over Fences in addition to tallying a team point with a 79-point Equitation ride on Sam. This marked the first time this season that Berfield won MVP honors in Equitation over Fences. She previously earned the MVP title against Miami University/Ohio State on Sept. 22 with a 90-point ride in Equitation.
Saturday's show was the third time this season that Huyett won MVP honors with a 73.5-point Reining ride on Red to earn the team point. She previously was named the Reining MVP against New Mexico State on Sept. 21 and earned Horsemanship MVP honors against Miami/Ohio State on Sept. 22.
As a team, the Hornets tied the Jackrabbits, 2-2, in each the Equitation and Horsemanship events. SDSU defeated DSU by a score of 3-1 in both Equitation over Fences and Reining.
Senior Shelby Bonneville (New Windsor, Md.) also won the team point in Equitation with a 73-point score on Dakota.
Freshmen Brooke Moore (Dover, Del.) and Alexis Gratkowski (Harrisburg, Pa.) won their team points in Horsemanship. Moore posted a 73.5 on Orkie while Gratkowski rode Walter to a 71-point performance.
Santana Wright earned Equitation MVP honors for the Jacks with an 87-point ride while Kelsey Champagne collected Horsemanship MVP honors with a score of 74.5.
Saturday's show wrapped up the fall schedule for the Hornets. They next travel to Martin, Tenn. to take on the University of Tennessee-Martin and Oklahoma State University Jan. 25-26.
