DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State University equestrian team wrapped up their opening weekend Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 loss to Fresno State at the Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center.

The Hornets won the equitation event, 2-1, and were led by sophomore Erin Engard's (Shamong, N.J.) score of 77 on horse Monday.  Her opponent, Nicole Roworth, scored a 75.  Junior Alyssa Berfield (Fredericksburg, Va.) also won her matchup with a 74 point performance with horse Emily over opponent Kimberly Steinbuch's 71 points.  Senior Caroline Foltz (Dover, Del.) tied Amanda Postel with 73 points on Mick.

Foltz earned the lone point for Del State in the equitation over fences event, posting an incredible score of 82 over Postel's 65.  Mick was also used in this matchup.

The Hornets finished the hunterseat events with a total score of 547 to the Bulldogs' 603.  FSU won the events with a point total of 4-3.

In the western events, junior Breann Huyett (Narvon, Pa.) earned a score of 73.5 to be named MVP of the reining event.  Overall, DSU tied the event with the Bulldogs at 2-2.  In addition to Huyett's victory, freshman Megan Marie Foley (Powell, Ohio) also won her matchup against Sydeny Coletti with a score of 71.5 to 70.5 on horse Question.

Junior McKenzie Trueba (Williams, Ariz.) won the lone event for Del State in the horsemanship category with a score of 69 to Christa Beezley's 61.5 on Walter. Sophomore Tayler Scuse (Dover, Del.) was narrowly edged out by Rio Haack by a score of 74-73 on horse Buddy.  Haack won the MVP for horsemanship on the day.

DSU wrapped up the western portion with a total score of 481 to Fresno's 554.5  The Bulldogs also won the events with a point total of 5-3.

The Hornets host their next show on Oct. 21-22 as they host Southern Methodist and New Mexico State at the Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center, located at 238 Grey Fox Lane on the north side of Dover.
