Kent, Ohio. (Dec. 6, 2008) --- Delaware State University's Nekisha Franklin is off to a flying start to the 2008-09 indoor track and field season. Franklin took first place in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash at Kent State University's Golden Flash Invitational. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native won the 60 with a time of 7.49 seconds, just ahead of runner-up Mycaiah Clemons of Pittsburgh (7.61). DSU's Kamera Brown was fifth in the race (7.80), while teammate Ashley Blake was sixth (7.82).
In the 200 meter dash, Franklin topped the field with a time of 24.89 seconds. She posted a time of 24.40 in the preliminaries.
Franklin's performances in the 60 and 200 also exceeded the MEAC Championship qualifying standards. Â
The Hornets received a second place finish from Christen Dillard in the triple jump, who had a top leap of 11.05 meters in the finals. Dillard also qualified for the MEAC Championships with the performance. Â
Delaware State's Kendra Mayers was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.14 seconds. Steph Tinney of Ashland was first in the 400 (57.16), while Shantea Calhoun of Pittsburgh was runner-up.
Delaware State was third in the 1600-meter relay. The Hornet team of Tracey Fan Fan, Alisha Jones, Brittany Roberson and Mallory Ross completed the course in a time of 3:59.95. Pittsburgh was first at 3:55.17.
DSU's Morgan Hovington was fourth in the shot put (12.94m), while Kendra Mayers was fifth in the long jump (5.22m).
Hovington, along with Mallory Ross in the one-mile run (5:22.30) and Kristen Johnson in the high jump (1.60m) also exceeded MEAC Championship qualifying standards during the meet. Â
